As a wannabe author who one day hopes to start, finish and then finally publish a novel, I am constantly reading, watching and listening to anything I can find on how to write better. This is how I came across a video by J. Kent Messum author of Bait and Husk as well as self-described angry author.
I have not read either Bait or Husk and in truth had not hear of J. Kent Messum but as I said anything to do with writing that catches my eye will be consumed.
As J.Kent Messum is someone who has not one but two novels published, I thought it best to at least listen to what he had to say and I, am glad I did. The guy is funny and drunk and the drunker he gets the funnier he is. The writing advice is pretty solid too.
Now, like with all advice you have to use it with a filter towards how you work best. For me, the advice of you don’t have to work linear is just not something I think I can do. The way I think and complete projects is and has always been in a linear fashion. I like to go from point A to B not A to C to X then back to B. It’s just not the way I’m wired.
The advice on disconnecting is one I need to be more disciplined in as I find it way too easy to get lost on social media for hours at a time and not really ever complete the work I had initially set out to do.
