iZombie is a funny, smart and altogether different take on the zombie genre. Yes, some of the tropes such as eating brains exist in the world of Liv Moore and her Zombie/Zombie Loving amigos, but the decaying, brain obsessed, ever hungry tropes that we expect have been tamed or made irrelevant.
With each episode of iZombie, Team Z attempts to unravel the bigger mystery of the zombie outbreak and to solve the murders and relationship issues that seem to be plaguing the city. In order to do this and this is the twist…Liv will eat the brain of a murder victim and this imbues her with the power to receive snippets of the victims past events leading up to death.
As iZombie prepares for Season 3 on April 4th, I thought it would be fun to take a look down memory lane at some of my favorite and most memorable episodes from the past two seasons.
After a hard partying college frat bro is murdered and his brain consumed by Liv she turns into a hard partying frat bro. This leads to Liv looking to party, rather then solve mysteries. We also learn about the existence of Blain’s father who has no love for his son and his son none for the father. Things are starting to heat up as we learn more about Blain’s ambitions. Ravi and Major also head out for a night on the town and testing Utopium for science. This is one of the funniest episodes by far as Liv acts throughout much the way a drunken frat boy would and the results are hilarious.
The Hurt Stalker
Clive finds himself in a lot of trouble as a woman he was romantically linked to is found murdered with his weapon. Now, without the aid of Clive, Liv is forced to uncover and solve the crime and with the help of Ravi they manage to discover a lot of information. While on this stalker brain, Liv goes off the deep end and tries to discover what is going on with Major and if he is cheating on her. She also gets tossed into jail where hungry, almost takes a bite out of her cellmate. It’s a great episode and one where we get to learn more about Clive, who he is and the type of detective he wants to be.
Fifty Shades Of Grey Matter
After a librarian is killed they discover she has just published her first book…an erotic novel. After consuming the brains, Liv goes on an innuendo and fantasy driven episode where she is very revved up. We also see in this episode that the Babineux and FBI Agent Bozzio have new details about the Chaos Killer which prompts Major to spring into action to attempt to cover his tracks. There is a lot of humour and a lot of the story arc uncovered within this episode.
Season 2 is nearing its end with this second to last episode that sees Major arrested for the Chaos Killer crimes, the bodies he had been hiding disappear and the threat of him turning into a full on raging zombie inside prison. Liv lets Clive know her secret which he has to be persuaded into believing and he throws the case to get Major out of jail. This leads to the loss of Clive’s relationship with Dale Bozzio, some credibility with the force and maybe some trust issues with Liv.
Holy crap! Season 2 ends with a bang as Max Rager is wiped out, the bad guys are seemingly eliminated, loose ends seem tied up, Clive is on board with the whole zombie thing and yet…and yet we see that Ravi and Blain are after the same girl, that there is a zombie army and that there is a whole lot of dead bodies that need to be explained. This is one of the best episodes in the series so far but it answers as many questions as it asks which makes me really excited for the season 3 premiere tonight.
