The thing that I love most about podcasts is that it that you can find a show on just about any topic imaginable. If you’re interested in gaming, tech, VR, music, board games, pop culture, comics or whatever else it is that you are passionate about and get excited for, chances are you will find a show that appeals to you.
Then using a simple client such as iTunes or DoggCatcher and now even Google Play Music you can download and listen to content that you love anytime of the day and wherever you are. If you’re stuck in the checkout line, on your daily commute, out mowing the lawn, stuck at work, or on a workout you can zone out and be entertained.
I am a huge fan of podcasts and have had a regular ever changing rotation of shows that I listen to weekly and have been doing so for years now. When I first started listening to podcasts there were no mobile clients and I would have to download them to my PC and then move them over to my MP3 player, but now with my client of choice it’s as simple as finding the show and letting the app do the work.
From technology to Star Wars to sciencey stuff and all things geek, here are some of my current favorite podcasts.
This Is Only A Test
The official podcast of Tested features a variety of topics being discussed each week that range from pop culture to science news to VR and of course technology. The show is hosted by regulars Norman Chan, Jeremy Williams and Kishore Hari who also are regular contributors to Tested itself. The show can get a little on the long side with episodes regularly going over an hour in length but every episode is fun and filled with tons of information and news on the topics that I’m most interested in.
Talk Is Jericho
I grew up during the attitude era of the WWE where stars such as Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock and HHH were big name draws. These guys were great but for my money, the wrestler to watch was Chris Jericho. When not wrestling somehow Jericho has found the time for acting, fronted the rock band Fozzy, released several albums and tours regularly, hosts a wildly successful podcast and is still wrestling.
Now, before you think that this is a wrestling centered podcast it isn’t. There is definitely some talk about wrestling and wrestling guests but there are also musicians, paranormal investigators, big foot and UFO hunters and more.
What makes the show interesting and well worth the listen is that Jericho himself is a charismatic host with plenty of stories to tell and he can get his guests talking. The fact that each episode is different from the last, gives the show a different feel each episode making it very hard to get bored of.
My current favorite movie review podcast features Anderson Cowan (movie maker, podcast host, screen writer) and Greg Srisavasdi (a member of the broadcast film critics association) take on the task of reviewing movies each week. The thing that I most appreciate about this movie review podcast is they don’t just tackle the big release movies, they bring attention to smaller films, the ones that get glanced over and they also dig deep to bring forth older movies that you may have missed. The chemistry between the two is very good and the difference of opinion that they both share about each film is a welcome change.
The Alton Browncast
My favorite chef from my favorite program on Food Network has got his own Podcast. That’s right, Alton Brown of Good Eats fame is cooking up a storm and talking to chefs, bakers and other culinary superstars about food, how they got started and more. If you are a fan of Alton Brown and Good Eats then you will love The Alton Browncast as he brings his humor, knowledge and charismatic personality to each and every episode. The only problem with The Alton Browncast is that it doesn’t get released as regularly as I’d like but when an episode does hit the download queue, it is the first thing that I will listen to.
A second entry from the team at Tested is Still Untitled and for very good reason. The show is hosted by Norman Chan, Will Smith (not that Will Smith) and Adam Savage…yes, the former Mythbuster. The topics from episode to episode are varied but are always interesting and can range from recent movies to book reviews to stories about prop/model making to Mythbuster stories, cosplay and so much more.
I highly enjoy the Still Untitled podcast for it’s variety of topics discussed and because of the genuine enthusiasm and passion that Adam has for the topics discussed each and every week. If you like nerdy, geeky things then I would recommend subscribing to Still Untitled.
Full Of Sith
If you love Star Wars then you’re in for a treat as the Full Of Sith podcast explores a galaxy far, far away each week. The topics they take on include character discussions, film reviews, episode reviews, news from Star Wars, interviews with those involved in Star Wars and they uncover the mythology withing the Star Wars universe. If you’re a Star Wars fanatic this is the podcast for you.
If I had but one complaint about the show is that it can run a little on the long side and while this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it does take some commitment to get through episodes that can run well over an hour.
I would argue that Chris Hardwick is King Of The Nerds and the website he started Nerdist along with the Nerdist podcast has done a lot to bring nerd and geek culture to the forefront, making it cool to be a nerd/geek. The Nerdist is a fantastic podcast that is more than an interview show, it’s more of a discussion where the guest and Chris have a chat about projects (upcoming and completed), hobbies, movies and just life in general. The episodes can swing from serious to comedic in a span of seconds and I find that I learn a lot more about the guest than I would have listening to a regular interview.
This is a must subscribe podcast for anyone interested in movies, video games, geek life or nerd culture.
