Kickstarter has quickly grown to be an amazing platform that is filled with passionate individuals and teams who are looking for funds to help bring those passions from dream to reality. Each week here on House Of The Geeks we are going to take a look at one Kickstarter project we think more people should know about and hopefully even support.
Last year I discovered a new sport that I had no idea even existed and had no idea was even being played in my city. That sport was disc golf and I was hooked almost immediately. Like traditional golf, you play a set number of holes and for each toss of the disc it counts as one stroke, who ever plays a round taking the least amount of strokes is the winner. It sounds simple, I mean how hard could it be to throw a disc at a basket? Let me tell you, it’s damn tough to do properly. Then you factor in the different discs on the market these range from drivers, mid-range drivers and even putters and then on top of that you have both overstable and understable discs that have unique characteristics in terms of how they fly, glide and turn. That’s not to even get started on the different types of plastic used by different manufacturers and within different lines created by the same manufacturer. It makes knowing the proper disc for each shot a vital part of improving your game.
Like golf, the more you practice the different shots and different scenarios, the better your game will be. For the most part I throw almost exclusively Innova discs with a few Daredevil discs mixed in for good measure. That doesn’t mean that I’m not open to throwing other discs, that’s just what I started with and what was available in my area.
With spring quickly approaching that means it’s almost time to get out on the course but first it’s time to buy some new discs and Arsenal Discs, a manufacturer who I’ve looked at in the past has launched a new Kickstarter to promote their discs and they look really, really good.
As a fan of the sport I hope that we start seeing more and more Kickstarters in the future for companies looking to create new and exciting products for the sport. It could be a better disc golf bag, mobile app for score keeping, instructional video series or like Arsenal, a new line of discs, it is an exciting time to be a disc golf fan.
If you haven’t heard of disc golf before or are wondering why you should get into the sport I can give you a few reasons:
- It’s fun – It really is fun to head out with friends to a local course and spend an afternoon just throwing discs and if you’re like me it’s still fun to head out and throw them poorly.
- It’s good exercise – You walk a ton in disc golf as you need to go from hole to hole and from throw to throw. In some cases if you throw poorly enough, you may even have to climb a tree or two to retrieve a disc.
- It’s affordable – A disc or two will run you under 30 bucks and most courses are free to play on
- It’s easy to learn – Learning the rules and learning to play is the easy part, getting good at it, now that’s the hard part.
Honestly, disc golf is one of my favorite activities that I’ve recently discovered and it looks like Arsenal Discs are doing there part to not only create a high quality and affordable product, but to also grow the sport.
