Stephen King is a master of horror and creating creepy things that go bump in the night. His job is to scare us and often times he succeeds, sometimes a little bit too much. His characters run the spectrum from supernatural to next door neighbor and the one thing they have in common is the ability to frighten us into leaving the lights on at night.
I began my journey into the work of Stephen King when I was in my early teens, which thinking back was probably a little bit too early to fully comprehend the content within the books. His works terrified me and yet I became a quick convert and dove headfirst into the genre of horror literature. Now, in my 30s I still go back and reread many of the early novels that I first read a long time ago and pick up on subtle nuances that I was too dense at the time to fully understand and appreciate. The one thing that hasn’t changed though is the ability for his characters to frighten me, it’s just the way they frighten is now different.
You have characters such as Pennywise from IT, Annie Wilkes from Misery, Mrs. Carmody from the Mist, Big Jim Rennie from Under The Dome, and even the possessed car in Christine. These are all memorable and iconic characters that stick with you long after the book has been read or the movie has been watched. For me at least, King is best at scaring the living daylights out of people not with his supernatural characters (who, don’t get me wrong will leave you up at night) but when he’s creating the next door neighbor type character who looks sane and normal on the outside but on the inside is a seething, rage filled individual with desires and motivations far worse than the supernatural beings. They scare more because you can actually imagine this person to be real and that is terrifying.
In the video above What Culture has strolled through the King collective and have narrowed down their picks of creepiest Stephen King characters of all time and it’s a good list but for my money, I’d put Annie Wilkes a lot higher.
What do you think of the list? Anything missing? Who do you think is the creepiest character ever created by Stephen King is? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
