When I was growing up there were two types of transforming robots. You had Transformers and that other thing. The Transformers were cool, they had Optimus Prime, a sweet cartoon and the toys were generally well made and transformed well.
Then you had the Gobots a toy that seemed like a very cheap knockoff and if your parents hated you or your Grandma didn’t understand the difference between fitting in at school and a wedgie, then you got Gobots. I actually remember having the Gobot Water Walk who was a Sea Plane and yes it was about as lame as it sounded.
The Gobots in most peoples eyes were just bad. They felt cheap in your hands, were often plagued with poor transformations, had terrible names and just were no where near as cool as the Transformers. It didn’t help that the cartoon wasn’t memorable and that it came after Transformers.
In the above video from Toy Galaxy they take a look at 10 things you need to know about the Gobots and they do a good job at looking at the history of these second class transforming robots and just why the toy line ended up failing. If you’re a fan of Transformers or just like to see the suffering of others then this is a walk down toy memory lane for you.
