The history of cinema is littered with movies that are reviewed poorly by the critics but yet make millions of dollars and are loved by the masses. These movies range in style from over the top action movies to romantic comedies to schlocky horror movies. The thread that connects all of these different movies together is the fact that we love to watch them over and over again. We feel bad knowing that we shouldn’t be enjoying the movie we are watching but we love it anyways. These are our guilty pleasure movies and on House Of The Geeks we aim to uncover these movie gems and admit our love for them.
Growing up in the 80’s and 90’s was a great time. We may not have had the internet or Netflix or even computers that could fit in your pocket, we had the best toys and Saturday morning cartoons. My favourite had to be He-Man and The Masters Of The Universe. I faithfully watched the cartoon and had many of the action figures including battle damage He-Man, Castle Grayskull, Skeletor and many other figures, vehicles and weapons. The one toy from the set that eluded me was Cringer/Battle Cat who was the faithful pet to Prince Adam but could transform into Battle Cat when needed by He-Man. It was pretty awesome.
I was a super fan of He-Man and when I first heard about a live action He-Man movie I needed to go see it the day it was released. That didn’t happen as my parents decided it wasn’t a movie they wanted to see and by proxy wouldn’t be a movie I would be seeing either. Not a lot of other people seen it either because it only opened to #3 and ended its theatrical run with just over a 17 million dollar take. Thanks to my parents I never did witness my childhood hero up on the big screen and wouldn’t until the day I walked into our local video rental store (kids, Google that up if you need an explanation) and there sitting on the shelf was a copy of Masters Of The Universe for rent, and it was all mine. In case you have no idea about what I am talking about I have embedded the movie trailer below so that you may bask in all it’s 1980’s era campy, cheesy glory.
As you can see this is a must add movie to anyone’s guilty pleasure movie library. Not only does it Masters Of The Universe star a very ripped and in shape Dolph Lundgren as He-Man as he battles arch nemesis Skeletor who has made his way to earth in search of the Cosmic Key a magical item that can open a portal to anywhere in the universe. The movie is over the top, dripping in cheesy scenes, over acting and poorly written dialogue but while that may be a weakness to the Rotten Tomatoes critics who have given Masters Of The Universe a paltry 17%, to others such as myself, that’s precisely what makes it so charming and fun.
While I may never have witnessed the original Masters Of The Universe on the big screen, I have hopes to do so one day as the rumour that a rebooted He-Man movie may be in the works and that it could star Kellan Lutz as Prince Adam/He-Man. This time around, they better include Battle Cat or I’m going to be so mad…might even complain about it on social media.
Until that day happens though, I will be introducing Masters Of The Universe to my own children and as they watch I will be cackling like Skeletor and smiling on the inside.
