You may as well call 2017 the year of Stephen King. Not only has the author been a tour de force on Twitter as he takes on politics but several of his best known works have been translated to either the big screen or our televisions screens. This year alone we have seen The Mist (on Spike TV), finally seen The Dark Tower hit the big screen, will seen the horrifying Pennywise terrorize a group of children in IT come September and tonight we see King’s first detective novel Mr. Mercedes premiere on TV. Everything as it seems, is coming up King.
Mr. Mercedes is a very well received novel from King that came out in 2014 and was his first true detective novel as he calls it a “hard-boiled detective novel” and was the first of a trilogy of books that include Finders Keepers and End Of Watch.
Mr. Mercedes deals with retired detective Bill Hodges and his attempt and living a normal life after retirement but he’s haunted by an unsolved case involving a killer who plowed through a crowd using a Mercedes. I have not read this novel…yet but that’s the over simplification of what happens in the book as I currently understand it.
As a huge King fan this book has been on my list to read for a while and I was shocked to see a trailer for it as I had missed the news on it being picked up for a 10 episode series. With the Dark Tower and IT coming out this year I had gone back and revisited those books and had set Mr. Mercedes aside for later reading. Now, I am torn as the series looks fantastic and worth watching but I fear it will spoil much of the book which has been heralded as a departure from the normal King book but is loved for being a gritty detective story.
I doubt I’m going to be able to stop myself from watching Mr. Mercedes and will probably end up both reading the book and watching the series at the same time.
Will you be watching Mr. Mercedes tonight? Are you a fan of the trilogy? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
