Growing up I was a hardcore Nintendo fanboy and in my eyes the console and game maker could do no wrong. We had the NES and probably close to 20 games, then we moved on to the Super Nintendo and we owned probably another 20 games for that system. We never even considered a Sega system and considered that system to be trash and by brother and I wouldn’t even consider getting another system in our house unless it was Nintendo.
Needless to say we were pretty pumped when we heard about the Nintendo 64 and even though there was a Sony PlayStation to capture our attention, we stayed true to Nintendo. We waited and waited for the release of the Nintendo 64 and in the fall of 1996 we picked up our console. It was amazing and revolutionary for the time. It may not have had a CD drive but at the time we didn’t think this was a big deal, Nintendo had Mario 64 with release and then GoldenEye, Perfect Dark, Conker’s Bad Fur Day, Mario Kart 64 and of course Zelda.
We played that system too many hours to count and loved every minute of it and yet still with how much of Nintendo fanboys we were, I didn’t know a lot of the facts about the console that Did You Know Gaming? has uncovered in the video above.
One thing that I found fascinating was that I never understood how incredibly difficult it was to port audio and full motion video to cartridge which is why many 3rd party developers went to other systems. It’s a great history lesson on one of the all time greatest consoles ever.
