In the wizarding world of Harry Potter we are exposed to many different types of creatures and spirits. In the Harry Potter series we see that Ron has a family ghoul living in the attic of the Weasley family home, in Hogwarts there are numerous ghosts (many of which are helpful and provide information) and then there are the poltergeists including the most famous of all Peeves.
The trouble making poltergeist Peeves is one of particular annoyance and for the life of me I couldn’t figure out why he was just never expelled from Hogwarts. I mean, certainly a wizard of Dumbledore’s talent could easily dispatch a trouble maker such as Peeves. It did always strike me as odd that the students, teachers and, headmasters of Hogwarts would ignore the bothersome spirit and not try to get rid of him. We also get a lot of backstory into how some of the ghosts came to be within Hogwarts, they were basically bad at death and instead of passing over, simply remained at Hogwarts. The ghouls of Harry Potter are apparently not vicious cannibals as suggested by other movies and literature and are instead, noise making house pets. The poltergeists like Peeves are much the same and cause problems, throw things and generally get into trouble.
It turns out the reason they couldn’t or didn’t get rid of Peeves is because he is as much a part of Hogwarts as the students are. Peeves is essentially a poltergeist created by the energy that generations of students coming through the school have imparted and he is the manifestation of that energy. When you think about it, it’s pretty cool and the Super Carlin Brothers break it down even further in the video above.
So, what do you think? Would you want Peeves in your school? Or is an exorcism in order?
