The Nintend0 64 was released in June of 1996 and like everyone else on the planet, I wanted one. It wasn’t a hard decision to make either as Nintendo was the juggernaut when it came to console gaming and with their proven track record of console launches it was easy to see why everyone I knew wanted the system. The only real competition at the time came from the Sony Playstation that at the time still wasn’t the proven console with the game franchises that they are now. The N64 was an end to an era as it was also the last home console to use cartridges…at least until 2017 and the release of the Nintendo Switch.
The system itself was amazing and as always Nintendo was an innovator coming up with an expandable console and controllers that while odd looking, were fantastic to use in games. Speaking of which, the games on the Nintendo 64 are classics and many of which offered a multiplayer experience that has yet to be rivaled even today. I remember playing hours, upon hours of GoldenEye with my friends and it never got old. You also had sweeping epic RPG games such as the Ocarina Of Time that were beautiful and filled with game play that pushed the limits of what a game of that type could be.
The Nintendo 64 was truly an amazing system with a ton of great games and in the video above, Watch Mojo takes a look at these classic games and counts down the best of the best. Don’t feel like watching? The full list is below.
10. Star Wars: Rogue Squadron
9. Paper Mario
7. Mario Party 2
6. Star Fox 64
5. Mario Kart 64
4. Super Mario 64
3. Super Smash Bros.
2. GoldenEye 007
1. The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time
There are some amazing games on this list but there are some notable missing games that I think are better and while everyone loves Mario, does he really need to be on the list multiple times? For me, I would need to include Conker’s Bad Fur Day, Pokemon Snap, and Resident Evil 2.
In Conker’s Bad Fur Day you get an adult oriented Nintendo game, which at the time was a big deal. Pokemon Snap brought the Pokemon franchise to the console and was a fun rail game that we spent hours playing. Then you have the terrifying Resident Evil 2 which I still think is the best of the series.
What do you think is missing from the list? What games would you get rid of? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
