One of the best things about being a parent is that you get to introduce your kids to the things that you love. They are all now hooked on Star Wars, board games, video games, science fiction, hockey and reading. My wife and I have even been introducing them to some of our favorite genres of music. This past week it occurred to us that we had yet to share the genius of Weird Al and his music videos with our kids. They of course, being raised on YouTube and the internet, know of parody music, but they had yet to learn about the grand daddy of all parody musicians in Weird Al and we immediately sat them down for a lesson in musical history.
It was a trip down memory lane for us and it was quite amazing to look back at the musical career that Weird Al has had. He has parodied every genre of music, all different types of artists and is still relevant today. While he is mostly known for humor, his lyrics are impressive and I might argue, harder to create as they need to fit the theme he is working with all while being constrained to the music he is parodying. You can also see how musically talented Weird Al just by looking at how he is able to jump from genre, musical style and even singing style from song to song.
Overall we spent a couple of hours immersed in Weird Al and our kids came away not only loving the music but requesting more of him the next day with a consensus of the following becoming the favorites that we played.
What was the first song you ever heard from Weird Al? What is your current favorite Weird Al song? Let us know in the comments below.
